Career & Study Mentee

I'm Kevin Afachao, a Computer Engineering MEng candidate at the University of Pretoria. My path in technology began with Telecommunications Engineering, where I discovered my fascination with how hardware and software intersect to solve real-world problems.

During my first job as a Quality Assurance Engineer, I encountered a challenge that shaped my career direction. Our regional reporting system was highly inefficient, requiring manual processing across 16 regions. Taking initiative, I developed automated solutions using Excel VBA that streamlined operations for both Technology and Finance departments. This experience showed me how technology could transform business operations and sparked my interest in creating scalable solutions.

The desire to make a broader impact led me to South Africa, where I'm now pursuing my MEng in Computer Engineering. What brings me here is my commitment to leveraging software development for meaningful change. I believe mentorship at this crucial stage of my career would help me better understand how to translate my technical skills and research into real-world solutions that can make a meaningful difference.

What I Expect From A Mentor:

I want a mentor who will be patient and supportive, giving me clear feedback in a gentle way. Because I tend to be agreeable, I may not always speak up when I'm uncertain, so I'd appreciate a mentor who regularly checks in with me and creates a safe space for questions.

I value reliability above all - if my mentor says they'll do something, I need to know they'll follow through. I appreciate having a regular meeting schedule and clear expectations about our mentoring relationship. While I'm not highly extroverted, I do want enough interaction to feel secure in my progress.
